On Sunday, September 13, 2015 Lucy Stefanyk organized a very successful community weed pull event at Misty Meadows campground in Naikoon Park on Haida Gwaii. Twelve adults and six kids showed up with gloves, pullers and lots of positive energy that they put to work on removing invasive Scotch Broom from the sensitive dune ecosystem in the park. They worked through sunshine, lightning and thunder and then finally a rainstorm of monsoon proportion that sent them running for cover 3 ½ hours later. Local NWIPC contractors for Haida Gwaill Judy and Dwight Hadley and Jan Oord joined the group for the event and shared information on invasive plants and plans for future invasive plant management. The president of the Tlell Watershed Society was also on hand and it was agreed look into pooled funding to purchase a few more weed pullers for community volunteer use, as there is a keen interest in continuing the removal of the broom from the dunes. To top off their volunteer efforts, the group donated their $250 honorarium from the NWIPC to the local Haida Gwaii SPCA.
